First Mow

Tag: General,The HouseEmily @ 6:19 pm

So I did the first mow of the yard today.  Took a lot less time than I expected; about 45 minutes.  I didn’t do the far back section of the yard because it’s still pretty short, but the front and sides were growing wild so those had to be cut.  The mower amazingly started on the first pull, not too shabby!  Mowing got a lot of the hay tossed around which is good because now we can rake some of it up.  We’ve got a few bare spots to reseed on both sides and one in the back, but other than that, the grass seems to be doing really well.

Lawn

Tag: General,The HouseEmily @ 6:31 am

Woohoo, I get to mow our lawn for the first time today! Not really looking forward to years of mowing, but it’s exciting to know that we waited so long for grass and it’s finally growing well and ready to be cut. We have such exciting lives 🙂

A good day

Tag: General,Karate,The HouseEmily @ 7:52 am

We finally got our seed & straw yesterday!!! Only took 3 months! We spent about 5 hours watering it; guess the yard was a little bigger than we thought, had to move the sprinkler around about 12 times *sighs* We’ll be doing that for the next week or so I imagine. Any tips on getting those little grass seeds up and going nicely?

Megabyte is super excited about getting a yard. We can’t wait for it to grow in so we can get a fence (we have an estimate next week) and a deck (yay!).

Also, at karate last night, Cathy and I were given the black belts that they had ordered for us from Japan. They are Shureido belts, which are handmade in Okinawa, Japan (where Shokotan karate was founded). Normally, belts cost $4-10. These cost about $70. They are extremely nice belts; top of the line. Cathy are I are very thankful and appreciative of our Sensei for these belts!

SunRocket Internet Phone Service

emily and I signed up for Sun Rocket internet phone service and the kit arrived this weekend.  If you need our phone number, shoot me an email.   The service is $200 a year if paid annually (comes out to $17 a month) and includes a slew of features and two phone numbers.  The phone numbers can be in just about any area code.  So far its pretty good; I need to tweak the QOS settings on the router to get it just right, but we are pretty happy with it.

New furniture from the Cahill’s

Tag: General,The HouseEmily @ 8:19 am

Sorry it’s been so long since we’ve posted anything about the house. We actually have done a lot, but we’ve been so busy that we forget to keep everyone updated.
Paul and I went to St. Louis last weekend and picked up some furniture from his parents for our front room. Lary (Paul’s dad) made us a beautiful hall table which looks amazing in that room, and his mom gave us an IKEA chair which if I say so myself, is the most comfortable and best napping chair in the world 🙂
We got a few more things like a nice clock, but haven’t hung them yet.
We’re going to have to get our butts in gear about hanging pictures, etc in our house. We haven’t done it yet; guess we’re scared of breaking through the new walls.

Grrr

Tag: General,The HouseEmily @ 11:37 am

Grrr….so again…we’re waiting on our house. We were promised seed & straw for our yard by June 1st. I called the sales counselor today to ask if she’d heard anything about grass, since the deadline is only about a week away. She said that she’d heard from other people this morning and was already on the phone with the superintendent.
The superintendent called me back and said that they are getting rid of all the rocks and putting down topsoil today, but that it may be weeks before we get seeded due to weather. Weather? The weather’s been great! Grr…anyway, who knows when we’ll get grass…or a fence. Hopefully things will turn around and we’ll get it sooner than later; I’m so tired of DIRT (so is Megabyte).
Wonder if Fischer’s ‘oopsie’ has anything to do with this taking so long (Fischer is our builder’s parent company).
Grr.

Landscaping part 2

Tag: The HouseEmily @ 9:22 pm

We pretty much finished the little wall in the front of the house. We still have to get 1-2 more blocks for the corner; and get a block split to fill in the holes on the side by the house. We also have to buy blocks to surround the tree out front, but at $2.77 per block, I think we’ll wait a bit.

Landscaping

We started putting the little wall in the front yard today. We have to buy many more bricks, but this will give you an idea about what we’re doing. It will eventually wrap around like an “S” to meet up with the driveway, making a few turns on the way. There will be some bricks around the tree and around the bush on the left of the garage. Click on the picture below to see the rest of the pictures from today’s work.

Landscaping

From Emily:
Paul and I are pepping up our landscaping in the front of our house. We’re putting in bricks to define the front bed and around the tree in the front (which we think is an oak tree). We started it yesterday, but the downpour of rain kind of tainted our efforts. We’ll put some pictures up as we progress.

We should be getting grass this week as well. They need to finish the sidewalk on the houses next to us, then they will be ready. One of the builder guys said sometime this week. We’ll believe it when we see it!

From Paul:
I wouldn’t call them bricks, but its all semantics right? 🙂 I think it will turn out nice and we are looking forward to working on more stuff once the grass is down and we have a “final” grading done to the yard. Then my dear ol dad will have to come visit so he can instruct us on a back deck (he’s quite the expert dontchaknow). I’m looking forward to getting the rest of the clothes and stuff (RIGHT emily? 😉 ) out of the garage so I can unpack the tools and start thinking about a work bench and storage for the garage.

Our project for this weekend is getting all of the hardware on our cabinets. We did the master bathroom ones and they look great! The only problem that we’re running into is that the screws are too short for the hardware to work on the pull out drawers. The wood is too thick, because of the regular thickness of the drawer, then added wood b/c of the drawer face. We’re going to have to go to Lowe’s and look for longer screws that will work. We’re doing all the regular cabinets though! I’ll try to get some pictures tonight of them.
