Trip to Pigeon Forge, TN

Tag: GeneralPaul C. @ 8:01 pm

I should have posted this a week ago, but things have been hectic with Sean’s ear infection and Emily was sick this weekend. But I finally had time tonight.

For Emily’s 30th birthday, we took a belated trip to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN. It was my first time there, and Em hadn’t been since she was 16 or so.
I booked a cabin a few miles outside off of Pigeon Forge’s main drag at the Pine Mountain Resort and Spa. Here is a snap shot of our cabin as well as a link to the gallery for the weekend:

We ran into one spot of trouble. If you are EVER going to the Gatlinburg or Pigeon Force area…never go during the Fall Grand Rod Run Car Show!! When we arrived at the main drag in PF, TN we hit traffic at stop light 12. It took us 1.5 hours to drive 6 stop lights. That is basically how traffic went the whole weekend. We probably spent as much time in our car as we did out of them! (not really…maybe). One thing Emily and I thought was funny were the people. They lined the strip with chairs for miles and just sat there. All Day. Watching traffic. All. Day.

The people were, of course, good ol boys from across the US-of-A. I had to hold Emily back and promise her a good dinner that night, so she would not leave me for this strapping buck:

Saturday we spent a good part of the day in Gatlinburg and went to Ripley’s Mirror Maze, The Movie Car Museum (pics in the gallery link above, including me with the 4077th jeep!), some shops and other stuff. We went to the craft district, but it was really a bunch of unimpressive junk. There were a couple shops of truly great stuff, but some stores, I barely made it in the door before I was turning around to leave. We left Gatilnburg and headed back to PF…only to sit in traffic for another hour or so (5 miles of driving).
Once back in PF, we hit some go-kart tracks (I let Emily win once), played four or five different mini golf courses, and ate dinner are a nice steakhouse. I was seriously golfed-out by the end of the night. Our last course was an indoor black light course with a pirate theme. This place also had a mirror maze that was a million times harder than the Ripleys maze in Gatlinburg. they also had this room with green lasers that you had to go from one end to the other w/o breaking the beams! It was fun, but Emily and I don’t think it was calibrated correctly or something.
Sunday we got on the road by 1030, stopped at a couple shops, and headed back to Cincinnati by about 1115am. There is a 25mile stretch to get from PF to the highway. Its state highways basically. It took us TWO HOURS to drive 25 miles. We sure were glad to get on the highway. Except for the torrential down pour that Emily had to drive through while I slept – I’m such a good passenger! When we got about 40 miles north of Lexington, KY traffic stood still. Dialing 511 told us there was something in the roadway and the road was closed. Oh Boy. This is what we saw…

…for four hours….
State troopers finally routed traffic to uS25 (dixie highway), but during that four hour “drive”, we moved two miles. What a nightmare. Emily and I had fun though, just talking and enjoying eachother’s company. Our 4.25 hour drive took us over 9 hours! Wow.
Finally, this weekend would not have been possible at all if it wasn’t for my sainted mother.

She drove the five hours on Friday (and Sunday) just to watch Sean so we could have this weekend away. She and Diana enjoyed some time together taking Sean to various places. I’m sure he had a blast. Actually, I know he did because he was totally crashed out and didn’t wake up at all sleeping Sunday night, and he slept until almost 830 the next morning! Thank you Mom – We love you and appreciate your help!!

Over labor day weekend, my brother, mom, sister and my sister’s boyfriend all came down to visit. We surprised them with a Saturday morning photo shoot with Steph Carson. A week later we had the photos back. I got them uploaded to our Gallery earlier this week. Click the photo for more:

Wow…

I’m a people watcher…always have been. I used to love to go to the airport really early before a flight just to watch all the interesting people coming and going.
And now…we have the Internet. Where people watchers join together and make wonderful websites like “People of Walmart”

Our little “Chip”let

Tag: General,SeanAndrewEmily @ 8:25 pm

We used to refer to Sean’s teeth as little chicklets, but tonight, he slipped while taking a bath and chipped his front right tooth! 🙁 It’s not a bad chip, but it is noticeable. I’m going to call my dentist tomorrow to see if we can get him in to get it at least buffed down; it’s a little bit sharp 🙁 Poor boy.

Sneak Peak

Tag: GeneralEmily @ 8:23 pm

Ok…so I was sitting around with nothing to do tonight, and decided to take Sean over to Portrait Innovations for some 18 month photos. I feel so guilty b/c we didn’t use Steph Carson, but I heard they take semi-decent, very quick, photos, so I thought I’d give it a try.

Here is a sneak peak of one of the pictures. We’ll wait to show the rest once ‘the fam’ sees them over Labor Day 🙂

So what has Paul been up to?

I’ve been really busy lately with work, travel, being a dad, husband, etc and haven’t really posted anything significant in a while. So what have I been up to?
Last month, I took a long weekend trip and flew to Seattle to visit Sean and Tim and Bridgette’s family, and go to a Mighty Mighty Bosstone’s concert (YAH!). While in Seattle, Sean and I visited one of my co-workers, Debbie, at her parent’s cafe – Chelan Cafe. Its a great place with AWESOME food. On our way out to the cafe, we drove by an import dealership and saw this parked on the street:

Its a VERY rare BMW M1 and it was in awesome shape. In the sun, you could see the carbon fiber reflecting back under the pearlescent paint.
So after our brunch at Chelan Cafe, Sean and I got on the road for our drive to Portland, OR, to visit Corey, Aija, and their newborn daughter Zora. I haven’t seen Corey and Aija since Stephen’s wedding, and have never been to Portland. on the way up, we passed this weird sculpture:

Its a very pretty city. We had some good meals there (especially lunch the next day!) and hanging out with old friends made the weekend worthwhile.

While in Seattle, I got to hang out with Tim, Bridgette, Rylee and Tyler. Turns out Rylee and Brig are big fans of So You Think You Can Dance, which is my anti-masculine guilty pleasure TV Show that Emily got me addicted to. Rylee LOVES the show. She knows every name, dance style, choreographer, etc of every person on the show. The three of us watch the show while Sean and Tim played some PS3 game 🙂
I got to swim in the Snohomish (?) river. The river was VERY high and the curretn was so strong that sean and I couldn’t get more than 10 or 15 feet from the bank without getting a chance of us getting swept away. A great public park..things you just don’t see in this area. Another thing that was great? I actually got to see the sun shine in the Pac NW. The three or four times I’ve been up there, its always rained (surprise!).
So the last night there, Sean, Tim, and I went to see my all time favorite band, The Might Mighty Bosstones. They got back together and this was the main purpose of my trip – to see them again. Of all the concerts I have been to, I”ve seen them the most. I think this was my 5th or 6th time seeing them. This show did not let me down. I’ll post some video and photos (ala cell phone so not great…) at a later time.

So fast forward to a week or so ago. For Father’s day, Emily got me a gift cert for Boi na Braza (sp?), a Brazillian steakhouse in Cincinnati. For those not familiar, these places charge a flat rate and you get a pretty decent salad bar. Also, they have waiters walking around with 15 different cuts of meat – sirloin, lamb chops, chicken breasts, filet mignon, and plenty of others. It was amazing. While NOT cheap, one of the things Emily and I enjoyed the most was the personal time. The wait staff doesn’t bother you. Because you let them know when you want more food, they basically stay away from your table unless you need a refill on your beverage. We had a great time talking all night without some person interrupting us to see if we wanted to buy something else. And MANY thanks to Aunt SheShe for watching Sean so we could have some time out. Oh..and the deserts are freaking great too! I love a perfectly cooked flan. Their wine list is pretty decent also. We had a nice pinot grigio.

Coming soon – my twin brother Sean is flying in from Seattle for a visit over Labor Day weekend. When he is here, my mom, Megan, and Megan’s boyfriend Matt, plan on coming down and we are hoping to see Stephen and Amy as well. (Little) Sean is going to have a BLAST!

Tonight, I gave Sean one of my die-cast cars. Its a Porsche that I got when I was in the 8th or 9th grade as a Christmas present from (I think) my grandmother’s brother, my Uncle Jack McNaughton (the Scottish side!). Sean LOVED it. Its bright orange. When Emily picked him up to take him to bed he cried. He wanted his car! So she gave it to him and carried him upstairs. Up in his room, she tried to get him to put it down on his dresser so they could get ready for bed. He wanted nothing to do with that. He was hugging and snuggling her…while hugging and snuggling his new car!! I knew I loved this kid for a reason!!

Can’t wait to see what happens when he finds out I have 20 or 30 diecast cars in storage 😉 He likes that orange Porsche 959 so much he may go into overdrive if sees the others! 🙂

Last night Uncle Phillip and Gramma got back from their trip to the Cabin and NYC and Phillip brought Sean back a present! Sean is now the proud owner of some Air Jordans!

He thought they were so cool. He is wearing them to “school” today. Phillip has a matching pair so we’ll have to get a photo of them wearing them together. He is in size sixes now, and when he gets to size sevens he gets to wear his Chucks that Megan and Matt got him 🙂

Mommy & Daddy

Tag: GeneralEmily @ 7:32 pm

Sean has always been really cute in the mornings. He looks at me when I walk in the room and says “Mama!” (and “Dada” to Paul).

On Saturday, I went in to get him and he said “Mommieeee” 🙂 My heart melted! He’s been calling me Mommy and Paul, Daddy, ever since! He sounds so grown up when he says it. Our boy is growing up too fast!

Potty Time!

Tag: GeneralEmily @ 8:15 pm

So Sean has surprised us BIGTIME, and has both pooped and peed in the potty! We have no idea where it came from, but it started yesterday. I was holding him, and he started farting so I said “Do you have to poop?” He said “Esss” (Yes). I said “Do you want to poop in the potty?” He said “Esss” So, we got the potty chair from the basement, which I didn’t think we’d really be using for another 4-6 months, brought it to the bathroom, he sat right down, and went! OMG!

Tonight, he was grunting again while sitting with Paul and we asked him if he wanted to go again. He laughed and went in the bathroom. He didn’t poop again, but he did pee! WOW!

Guess we’ll actually have to work at this now! Amazing. I thought boys potty trained so late! Check out this cute picture of him on his potty. I know, how embarrasing. This one will definitely have to come back out at his wedding. hehe
