Merry Christmas!

Tag: GeneralEmily @ 8:51 am

Even though this has been one of the strangest, emotional, plan-disruptive Christmases ever, we are still thankful for everything we have, and for each other. We hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas in spite of it all!

Fun Time Flying..

Tag: GeneralPaul C. @ 12:23 pm

We are finally in New York for the holiday. Our great trip started on Thursday when I got an automated call from delta letting us know our flight was canceled and we were rebooked for Saturday evening. Wonderful So I sicked emily on Delta to get us on another flight on Friday. She got us onto a Northwest Airlines flight that had a layover in Detroit. We were originally scheduled to make it to Albany by 1030pm.
When we got to CVG to start our trip, the desk agent could not find our reservation that Delta created. Emily called Delta and found it for him. That took us about 45 minutes. Next we find out NWA charged $15 per checked bag. Great. They were nice enough not to charge for the 63lb bag (50lb limit). Merry Christmas, here’s my $30.
After waiting in line forever at the TSA check, we discovered that since our tickets were only 24 hours old, we were lucky enough to be given a full security check – all our bags, both my laptops, etc. Its now about 645pm and our plane leaves at 7:10. Luckily we were flying out of concourse A.
We finally get on our plane and the captain makes an announcement that we are 300lbs overweight on luggages and 400lbs overweight on fuel. This makes us unable to land. His solution was to sit on the runway and run the engines at partial throttle to burn off the 400 extra pounds of fuel. Wonder how much that just cost the airlines? Give me a bucket and a plastic tube and we could have siphoned it out! 🙂
After 30 minutes or so, we finally get in the air. Uneventful but short flight. We land in Detroit in the very last terminal in the C concourse and rush to our next gate two terminals away, only to find out our flight is delayed by at least 20 minutes.
This is apparently the only flight that has been able to get to Albany since Thursday due to weather. The standby list was more than a page long. Luckily we had tickets. The plane didn’t board until 1030. The captain of this flight announced that they were loading a bunch of extra luggage onto the plane from missed flights earlier so we were going to be there a while extra. That “while extra” turned into an hour of sitting. We finally get into the air after 1130pm, near two hours after the plane was originally supposed to fly at 942pm.
We landed after 1230am and made our way to the baggage claim. They loaded all the baggage from our flight and two others onto the small conveyor belt. This included all the luggage for people who were not there – all the extra from our flight. As we waited for our luggage to come out, a handler made an announcement that all the luggage from the Detroit flight has been unloaded. Thats swell. So we, along with about 60 other people on our flight didn’t get our bags. The only bag we got was Sean’s.
As I type this, I am still in my clothes from yesterday and have no clue when I will get my bag — if I get my bag — for this 9 day trip. Ugh. If I am going to pay $15 per bag to fly on your plane, you better keep a close eye on my luggage. Somethings never change.
All in all, we finally got to bed around 4AM. And yes, Sean decided he still needed to get up at 730. He is still up, with only a 15 minute nap this morning.
There is about 18 inches of snow on the ground and it is still falling lightly. Sean is having a blast playing with Auntie Cate, Bailey dog, and GingerKitty and getting into a lot of trouble. Hopefully he will get to see Diana soon as well. Brian and Ash are at the CVG airport now trying to catch one of the flights up. Mom and Megan will be joining us on the 23rd at the cabin and I’m sure Sean is going to be tickled to see them again 🙂

Update on “Grams”

Tag: GeneralEmily @ 6:53 pm

Sean and I got back late this afternoon from New York. We had a good visit with Oma, Opa and Aunt Cate. 🙂 I spent 12 hours on Saturday in the hospital with my mom, Uncle Bob, Aunt Sue and Aunt Laurie. We spent time our time in the ICU waiting room, taking turns going in to be with/visit with Gramma.

Grams has been sick for a few weeks, and has been in and out of the hospital for what seemed like minor sickness, but returned home the most recent time, and ended up being transported to the ER not too much later. She has what’s called Clostridium difficile, or “C Diff” in short. She hasn’t been doing very well; her kidneys have shut down and she’s in septic shock. Through the weekend, she had times of mental improvement, but the physical symptoms were never better. She started getting edema, and now has another infection that they can’t treat because of the medications she’s already on for the c diff.

Family continues to hold her up in prayer, and stay by her side. We’re not sure what the outcome is going to be at this point, we are just praying for her healing and comfort.

I”ll update as I know more…

Thanksgiving Weekend

Tag: GeneralEmily @ 9:39 pm

This post is a little late, but what a great weekend. We were surrounded by family and friends, had a wonderful dinner Thursday night, spent some time relaxing and bopping around town Friday and Saturday, and had Sean’s baptism today. Sean did a wonderful job during the service and was as cute as ever! Check out pictures from the past week and the baptism below:

Also, we got a picture of the tooth! We held him town Thanksgiving night and got a shot of it!

Poor, poor boy

Sean had his 9 month checkup today. It didn’t go so well :-(. Let me back up…Saturday the 15th we took Sean to urgent care b/c we thought he had another ear infection…and he did. That made #3 since August, and another round of antibiotics started. He’s also had a cold for about 1.5 weeks that we’ve been struggling with.

So on to today…I discussed his skin dryness with the doctor and he said that Sean definitely has excema. He gave us some suggestions of things to use on him, but said that he’ll probably stay the same until he gets a little older *sigh*

Next, he checked his ears. Another ear infection. How do you get another ear infection when you are on your 9th day of an antibiotic? I have no idea, but he does. *double sigh* So he was prescribed another, stronger antibiotic to take instead. The doctor also referred him to an ENT to discuss the possibility of getting tubes put in. We don’t really want to do it, but he said 4 ear infections in 4 months isn’t the greatest course to be on…so we have to go to the ENT and get checked out.

Then he had to get a flu shot. No biggie, but no shots are fun 🙂

Then he had to get 2 fingersticks (ouch!). One for a lead test (standard test) and one for an iron test. He was low on his iron, so now he has to get on an iron suppliment 2x day for 6-8 weeks, then get retested *triple sigh*

Poor little guy. At least he’s off the chart developmentally. 🙂 They can’t believe that he’s already standing somewhat on his own, cruising, saying Mama,Dada, Baba, Ah-done, waving, etc. He’s a little behind growth-wise (40-50% in everything) but they aren’t worried.

So, pretty eventful day. More medicine, more sicky boy 🙁 At least he gets to see lots of family / friends in the next few weeks, so he’ll get lots and lots of extra lovin’!

well isnt this fun?

*edit: i tried to post from my cell phone…but the box to type the actual blog didn’t show up so I couldn’t finish it*
Well, for the first time in probably 6 years, I had a hard drive failure. This happened in my new PC – the one I built about 3 or so months ago. The drive is under warranty, but of course, that does nothing for my data. I’ve been able to pull off my thunderbird mail files – haven’t tested their integrity yet. Glad I could get those, as I have just about all my emails since 2001 or 2002 and would die if I lost all those.
Once I have it up and running, I’ll sign up for Carbonite.com’s service and start my backups again with Comodo Backup (free!).
It woudl be one thing if I heard the drive clicking or saw error messages in the Windows Syslog – but no. The PC locked up on Sunday afternoon, then bluescreened. I rebooted and it was trying to load GRUB off one of my secondary drives (guess it was installed on there from some previous install). Wierd…booted with an XP cd and the pc was assigning my XP drive with an E:. Reloaded the windows boot loader and reset the MBR only to have it reboot into XP and immediately bluescreen. Wonderful. Guess I know what I’ll be doing over the next few days – trying to recover data, and reinstalling Windows. I had XP Pro 64bit this last time ardound. Maybe I will go Vista Ultimate 64 bit this time. Of..maybe I’ll toss it all away and install Ubuntu. Its worked well for months on my laptop and I’m addicted to Frozen Bubble 🙂
Lesson learned:
No more OEM harddrives for me. Retail only.
