Training update

Tag: Chip,GeneralEmily @ 11:28 am

A quick update on Chip’s potty training for everyone…

He’s doing well, the first ring is entirely removed and he doesn’t care a bit.  We had a scary incident this morning, his back foot fell through the hole as he was walking around on the toilet and got all wet.  He jumped down and seemed really “pissed off” (as Monkey would say).  I had to work with him for about 10 minutes with treats to try to encourage him to get back up on the toilet.  I think it scared him.  Luckily I saw it happen and got him back on track right away.  Would have been really bad if he had become scared of the toilet and stopped the process.  *sigh*

Hopefully he’s ok with it again and nothing is peed on when I get home.

Man, I feel like a woman!

Little Chip is getting his manhood stripped away from him this morning.  He was pretty angry at me when I left him at the vet.  Hopefully he’ll forgive me.  I’ll tell him it was Paul’s idea.

I finally caught Chip on the potty and snapped a picture.  It’s pretty silly, but I wanted to prove to everyone that he was actually using the toilet 🙂

Step 4

Tag: Chip,GeneralEmily @ 9:09 am

I admit, I wasn’t suppose to start step 4 until after this weekend, but as I said in a previous post, the mess of step 3 was getting to me.  So, I went ahead and cut 1/2 of the small inner circle out.  Amazingly, he’s going on like nothing happened!  He was a little curious about the ‘missing piece’ in his potty, but didn’t miss a beat “going” in it.  He’s doing really well with his “aim” as well.  The trick of it all is to gradually get your cat to move his feet to the outer rings and eventually onto the seat when they go.  He’s actually making it close to the hole, or even in it sometimes.  He’s so smart!!!  How did we ever get such smart kids?

Must be the awesome parenting 🙂

I’m still trying to snap a picture of him on the toilet cause it’s so cute, but every time I hear him up there, he’s done by the time I grab the camera.  I’ll keep trying.

This is a lot of work…

Chip did really well this weekend with his potty kit.  He hasn’t had any accidents, which we’re very proud of :-)  The only this is that I have to keep the Dyson right next to the bathroom because he makes a big mess.  I didn’t expect this.  Since the litter tray for the toilet is only about an inch deep, it doesn’t provide much of an edge to keep the litter in the tray.  When he scratches around and covers up his ‘stuff’, he kicks a lot of the litter onto the floor.  I had to cover the bathroom vent with foil to keep litter from getting down there, and I have to vacuum the floor every day.

It’s also been a pain the neck to scoop the litter into the toilet.  I originally had to figure out a way to adhere the kit to the toilet, since it was a little loose, when Chip jumped up onto it, it flipped over.  Needless to say that put us back a day or two out of fear.  I used some little double-stick foamy dots from scrapbooking to adhere it.  Easy to take off later.

But, since there’s no hole in the tray yet (that’s Step 4), you have to scoop the litter and lift up the tray and dump it under, then re-attach the tray.  Annoying, but it’ll only last another week.  Can’t wait until I get that first hole punched in it, so I can just scoop the ‘stuff’ through the little hole.  I figure we’ll do Step 4 after this weekend.  I think he’ll do fine with it, he’s VERY smart!

Chip is so smart! About 5 minutes after I took away his litter box he went in the bathroom and searched around for it for a little while, then jumped up onto the toilet and peed in the training kit thing! Yay Chip!! A big HA! to everyone who doubted me! 🙂

Hopefully he’ll continue to progress and he’ll be like the cat on Meet the Fockers sooner than we know it!

Step 3

Tag: Chip,GeneralEmily @ 5:43 pm

Step 3 is to remove the litter box completely and have only the toilet for him to go in.  We’ll see what happens!!

On a side note, it’s pretty pathetic that the most exciting thing going on in our lives (based on our past few posts) has been toilet training the cat. *smirk*

Step 2

The “CitiKitty Toilet Training Kit” came yesterday!  I went ahead and set it up; figured it couldn’t hurt if he got used to it and maybe used it early…

He seems to like it, Paul said he’s using it as a sandbox instead of a potty though.  I’ll have to catch him going in the litterbox and see if I can redirect him to the toilet.  Check out the pictures:

Houston, we have a problem!

Chip was making a racket last night around 3am, so I shut him in the guest bathroom with his potty.  When I went to open the door this morning to let him out, It wouldn’t open.  He had somehow opened the vanity drawer right next to the door all the way.  I could only open the door about a 1/8 inch slit before it banged into the vanity drawer.  Good going Chip.  How was I going to get you out?  As I sat thinking, he kept screaming his lungs off crying to get out of the room.

I tried getting a pencil through the crack to push against the side of the vanity door to nudge it closed, but the crack in the door wasn’t big enough even for a pencil to fit through.  Argh!  I finally came up with the brilliant idea of getting a steak knife and sticking that through the crack and nudging the drawer shut 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch until it closed.  Brilliant mind, if I say so myself 🙂

*sigh*  What a morning.

Step 1

Got home today and moved Chip’s litter box to the guest bathroom (sorry guests!).  He seems to like it; peed right away (good boy!).  Next step is to raise the litter box up 1-2 inches every couple days until it’s even with the toilet.  Hah, we’ll see how that goes.  He’ll probably knock it over!
