First snow storm

Tag: The HouseEmily @ 6:10 pm

Well, it doesn’t look like they’ve done that much on the basement since Tuesday. I went today after work and it looks like they have dug about 5-6 feet down. The bottom is flat and the sides are nice and smooth. I’m not sure how deep they dig before they start pouring the cement. They do have plastic down on the ground where they’ve dug. I’m not sure if that’s to keep the ground from freezing too much or if they put plastic before they pour cement. Anyone know?
We had a “major snow storm” yesterday (at least by Kentucky standards) so work on the basement may go slow the next day or so until the snow / ice clear a bit.

The plastic is to try to keep debris and snow out. They will remove it when they pour the concrete. Sides get poured first, then floor.

Well in TX we don’t have much experience with basements (too much clay in the soil, ground contracts and expands to much for basements, unless the walls were 4 feet thick it would be crushed when the clay gets wet). But I am pretty sure they would put more than plastic down before they pour. I would bet they need to dig out footers and lay out the rebar grid. So the plastic is just a precautionary measure at this point. There will more than likely be plastic vapor barrier under the rebar grid when the pour. But I am no home builder I am a ditch digger. I can tell you how its done down here since we just finished our house (no basement though, sorry).
